The Decision to Join the United States Air Force: A Tribute to Daniel Romero Jr.

It is a proud feeling to see a loved one making an honorable choice to serve his country by joining the armed forces.

I can say that I had the wonderful and exciting privilege of seeing my oldest nephew born. He came out face up or, as I like to call it, sunny side up. I will never forget the moment I saw him enter into this world. Since he was face up, I was clearly able to see all of his facial features. The most remarkable thing I recall is how his eyes opened and closed. It was as though he was blinking in pure wonder and amazement at his new surroundings. That was nearly 18 years ago.

I have since watched Daniel grow up and become a young man. As the cousin and best friend of my oldest son, Jesse, I think of Daniel as one of my own. I cannot possibly guess how many times in the last several years he has spent the night at my house. For a long time it was almost every Friday and/or Saturday night. He is a fun, friendly and intelligent person who I have always enjoyed talking with. His random jokes and crazy sense of humor bring me lots of laughs, sometimes just when I need them most.

Now that the childhood fun is ending, it is time for him to grow up. Daniel must take on the responsibility of mapping out his future. It is an understatement to say that his choice is an important life decision. His background points to the military. He was enrolled for a time with the Civil Air Patrol, during which he flew a Cessna a number of times. He earned certificates for completing (and surviving) encampment two summers in a row. He also completed ground school. He went to Haiti recently with a group of men from church, an experience that changed his life.

Daniel's final decision came when he asked God for direction as to what he should do with his life. He simply asked, "What do you want me to do?" He quickly received an answer and the confirmation he needed. With that said, he officially joined the United States Air Force when he was sworn in today. He will be departing for his six-year endeavor this coming June. It was confirmed for me that it was his calling when I learned he scored 93 out of a possible 99 points on his ASVAB test. He qualifies for virtually every job in the Air Force.

Although I have placed my full trust in God, I cannot help but worry about his safety and well being. He is going far away into unknown territory. My father also joined the Air Force in 1966 at the age of 19. A year later he was deployed to Vietnam, placed on the front lines of the enemy in full combat. Although I am very proud my father served, I would not wish his experience on anyone.

When joining the armed forces, you have to be ready to serve your country and our God in whatever capacity you are called. What guts and glory my young nephew has in order to make such a commitment and sacrifice. He is a true soldier and my personal hero.

Daniel, I love you and am going to miss you like crazy. Although it will hurt me deeply to see you leave, I am so proud of you. Go get 'em, "D!"
