Winning Homemade Christmas Gifts

There are less than 50 days until Christmas, and the clock is ticking. It is time to put on your creative thinking caps because there are many homemade ways to make winning gifts.

No, it is not too early to start thinking about Christmas and all of the shopping, gifts, decorating and general madness that goes with it. I am sorry to inform you that there are less than 50 days before Christmas. While this may seem like a lot, you know how fast it will go. It is time to plan, and what better time than the present?

If we think in terms of both cost-efficiency and appreciation, homemade gifts are by far at the top of the list. With the economy in the shape it is in, many people cannot afford to purchase gifts. I happen to feel that this particular holiday, Christmas, has become a bit commercialized. That is why making homemade gifts is such a great idea.

Below are some ideas I hope you will find interesting and helpful.

Lighted Potpourri Holiday Jars:

  1. Purchase a large glass jar or bowl (a canning food jar would work too).
  2. Add a layer of potpourri to the bottom of the jar.
  3. Feed in a string of 20-30 mini Christmas lights, adding potpourri as you go. Maintain an even amount of both inside the jar. It would be wise to test the light string before going any further.
  4. The end of the light string should come out of the top of the jar and be tucked toward the back of it.
  5. Fasten a doily, or other circular fabric, over the top of the jar with elastic in order to maintain a solid hold.
  6. Cover the elastic with a ribbon or raffia.
  7. You may wish to use a glue gun to afix the end of the light string to the side of the jar so it is not sticking out.

"Especially Made For" Gift Baskets:

I know the idea of gift baskets is not totally unique, but the way they are put together can be. Whatever the gift recipient's favorite things are, fill a gift basket with them. An example is a basket for a clean freak who enjoys working with cleaning products.

  1. Purchase a wicker or straw-type basket, according to the size you prefer.
  2. Fill the bottom of the basket with confetti or tissue gift paper
  3. Fill the basket with cleaning products that you know they already use or would probably like to try. These items could consist of dusting wipes, wet glass wipes, all-purpose wet wipes in a can and an assortment of other cleaning products. Use your own creative and personal touches.
  4. Throw in some scented candles.
  5. Place the basket into an appropriate-sized clear plastic gift bag that you can fasten at the top and add a bow or ribbon to.
