2013 Alverno College Golf Season Preview

A new chapter of Alverno College Athletics begins as the Inferno golf team tees it up for its inaugural season. Director of Athletics Brad Duckworth, who is serving as head coach of the golf team, has 16 student-athletes on the initial roster.

"I am really proud of the women that have committed to help begin our seventh sport at Alverno," Duckworth said. "This season we have a wide range of talent and backgrounds, but what is not ranging is enthusiasm. We are committed to championship-level competition in all of our sports, and golf is no different. This year's team will lay the foundation for future success."

The team is comprised of first-time student-athletes, student-athletes from other Inferno teams, and a few who have exhausted their eligibility in another sport. The golfers hail from four different states including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

"I am really looking forward to seeing the anxiety of our golfers turn to confidence. We have a decent group of athletes that, with time, will really compete well."

The Inferno begins the season with a pair of road duals this weekend versus fellow Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foes Lakeland College on Saturday and Marian University on Sunday. Saturday's 10 a.m. dual is at The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls, while Sunday's noon match is at Whispering Spring Golf Club in Fond du Lac.

The first-ever home match for Alverno is versus Wisconsin Lutheran College on Sunday, Sept. 8, 10 a.m., at Whitnall Golf Course in Franklin. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at North Shore Country Club in Mequon marks the team's first multi-team tournament of the season at the Concordia University Wisconsin Invite.

To close out the schedule, Alverno will play in three more duals, two at home and one on the road, as final tune-ups preceding the three-day NACC Championship at Trappers Turn in Wisconsin Dells, Oct. 5-7. The NACC Champion receives the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship in the spring.

"Golf is a sport that can last a lifetime. The opportunity for our women to learn and compete at the highest level will certainly be life changing. Personally, I am thrilled to launch the program. This is our seventh sport and it signifies the considerable and constant growth of Alverno Athletics."
