The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Alverno College collected 13,477 nonperishable items and donations for Cans Across the Conference, the annual Northern Athletics Conference food drive.

Alverno collected the most items in the community service competition amongst the 13 institutions in the NAC, setting a new record in the annual service initiative for the second-straight year. All items and monetary donations collected by Alverno's SAAC were contributed to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and Hunger Task Force in Milwaukee.

"The purpose of college athletic programs is to build compassionate and effective citizens," Alverno President Mary Meehan, Ph.D., said. "Cans Across the Conference is an example of how students take what they learn on the courts and fields, and demonstrate what teamwork and leadership can really do for a community. I could not be more proud of the Alverno community."

Cans, other nonperishable items and toiletries were counted, and monetary donations were also accepted, with one dollar equaling two items in the spirited competition. Alverno nearly doubled its total of 7,108 items in last year's food drive.

For the second-consecutive year the conference set a new record. This year's total, 31,100, surpassed last year's mark of 27,232, marking the first time the league has exceeded 30,000. Over the past 6 years the conference members have collected nearly 125,000 items for their local charity organizations.

"It is very gratifying to see the effort of our student-athletes through each of our institution's SAACs," NAC Commissioner G. Steven Larson, Ph.D., said. "These efforts will aid people in each of our 13 institution's local communities. As evidenced by the record number of donations made by the NAC SAACs this year, the student-athletes, coaches, campus organizations, fans, and administrators have once again done an outstanding job providing food, money, and additional items to help others as needs continue to rise."
