Crusaders Snap Inferno's 6-Game Win Streak

Alverno College was held to a season-low scoring effort in a 42-28 loss to host Maranatha Baptist Bible College Thursday night in a Northern Athletics Conference game.

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Alverno College was held to a season-low scoring effort in a 42-28 loss to host Maranatha Baptist Bible College Thursday night in a Northern Athletics Conference game. The loss snapped the Inferno's six-game win streak, and was the team's first loss in the month of January.

It was a rough start for the Inferno as the team accumulated more turnovers (6) than points (4) in the first 10 minutes of action. Yet defense kept the team in it, and trailed the Crusaders just 5-4 at the 10-minute mark.

Alverno gained the lead, 6-5, on a pair of Devon Gorman free throws and remained in front at halftime, 12-9. Both teams put up a solid defensive effort, as Maranatha was held to just 15 percent shooting and Alverno to 20 percent in the first half.

Yet the host Crusaders (10-4, 7-4 NAC) outplayed the Inferno in the second period and outscored the visitors 33-16 in the half, mostly due to a 52-percent shooting effort in the period, compared to the Inferno's 20-percent accuracy.

Alverno (12-7, 9-3) trailed 32-28 with 2:30 to play, but missed its final six field-goal attempts, forced to foul and sent Maranatha to the free-throw line where the Crusaders scored their final six points.

Gorman lead the Inferno with 10 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks, while Maranatha's Hallie Sheley led all scorers with 18 points.

Tonight's point total is the lowest by an Inferno team since a 74-28 loss to Edgewood back in December of 2006, and first total under 30 since that time.

Alverno returns to action with another road game at Benedictine University on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
