Eagles Bounce Cold-Shooting Inferno From NAC Tourney

Alverno made just 21 percent of its field goal attempts, less than half of its free throws and lost to host Benedictine 52-42 in a NAC women's tournament game Saturday night in the Rice Center.

LISLE, Ill. -- Alverno College made just 21 percent of its field goal attempts, less than half of its free throws and lost to host Benedictine University, 52-42, in a Northern Athletics Conference women's basketball tournament quarterfinal game Saturday night in the Rice Center.

The Inferno trailed the entire contest, yet despite its cold shooting, trailed by just four points, 40-36 with 3:20 remaining.

The Eagles quickly put the game out of reach with a 3-pointer, a steal and a layup to go back up nine points with 1:45 to play and made 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to ice the postseason victory.

Ashley Berry and Devon Gorman were the only Inferno players to make multiple field goals as Berry scored a team-high 16 points on 8-of-16 shooting and Gorman added 14, but shot just 4-of-19 from the floor.

Gorman led all rebounders with 11, while senior Kayla Kennedy snagged 10 rebounds and had a game-high five assists.

Kennedy set the school-record by playing in her 102nd-career game.

Meghan Novak scored a game-high 24 points for the Eagles, who shot 39 percent from the field and made 85 percent of their free throws.

Alverno ends its season at 16-10 overall, while Benedictine (14-12) will play at Wisconsin Lutheran College in the NAC Semifinals next Thursday.
