Inferno Battles For Victory Over Cougars, Loss To Stars
The host Inferno rallied to win five of the six singles matches for the 6-3 victory today at Grant Park.
SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- After the Alverno College tennis team trailed the visiting Concordia University Chicago Cougars 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play, the host Inferno rallied to win five of the six singles matches for the 6-3 victory today at Grant Park.
The Inferno (2-3, 2-3 Northern Athletics Conference) lost its second conference dual of the day, 7-2, to Dominican University.
Versus the Cougars (0-3, 0-2 NAC), the Inferno's No. 3 doubles team of Libby Kent (Oak Creek, Wis.) and Ashley Schmeling (South Milwaukee, Wis.) won their match, 8-3, for the team's lone score in doubles action.

At the No. 2 match, Damanique Drake (Milwaukee/King) and Lin Liu (Greenfield, Wis.) lost a close back-and-forth match, 8-6.
Kent then picked up the first singles win for the Inferno with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot, and Schmeling won No. 6 in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) to tie things up 3-3.

Liu won the No. 3 match in just two sets, but needed a tiebreaker in each for the 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3) victory, which gave Alverno the lead, 4-3.
With Drake just underway in the No. 5 match, Abigail Kohal (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) secured the dual win with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 match. Drake also went on to win, 6-3, 6-3.
The Stars (1-2, 1-2 NAC) used the momentum of a 3-0 lead after doubles play to secure a 7-2 win, as Kohal (6-4, 6-3) and Liu (6-4, 6-2) managed the only Inferno victories in the afternoon dual. Kohal and Tricia Goska (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) lost a close No. 1 doubles match, 8-6.
Alverno returns to action in another home NAC dual on Tuesday, against Concordia University Wisconsin. The dual will be played at Nicolet High School in Glendale, with a 4 p.m. start time.
