Inferno Caps Off Homestand With Victory Over Sabres

MILWAUKEE -- Devon Gorman collected her fourth double-double of the season and was one of three Inferno players to score double figures as Alverno College defeated visiting Marian University, 60-52, in Northern Athletics Conference action Tuesday night.

The win was the fourth on a five-game homestand and the third straight for the Inferno (9-6, 6-2 NAC). Alverno is now in a tie for first place in the NAC North Division with Concordia University and Edgewood College, both of whom the Inferno have defeated this season.

Alverno jumped out to an early 18-2 lead before Marian (4-10, 3-5) ran off 10-straight points to cut the lead to 18-12.

Alverno would lead 30-22 at halftime and extend the spread to 40-27 early in the second period, but the Sabres stuck with it, and hit three-consecutive 3-pointers to cut the Inferno advantage to just two.

"We keep having blowout-phobia," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "It's a focus thing, and against Marian, if you blink they make two 3s."

The Sabres lead the league with 8.1 3-point field goals made per contest, and connected on 9-of-31 tonight.

Though the Inferno -- which never trailed in the game -- answered with a 7-0 run to put the lead back to nine, 54-45, capped off by an Ashley Berry layup.

"Marian gave us a big punch, but to our credit, we responded and fought right back," commented Duckworth.

The Inferno made six of its final eight free throws to seal the victory, and connected on 20-of-26 overall -- above 75 percent for the third time in as many games.

Gorman, who sunk 10-of-12 attempts from the free-throw line, had game-highs with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Kristen Speerschneider chipped in 13 points on 4-of-8 from long range and Jamie Hoernke added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Inferno's bench outscored the Sabres', 10-0, as Berry scored eight and Marissa Christjohn added a pair.

Rissa Cerveny hit 3-of-6 3s to lead the Sabres with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The next action for Alverno is Thursday at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. downtown at the Kern Center.
