The opening day of the 2012 Alverno Classic wasn't kind to the host team, as Alverno College lost both of its matches in three sets today in Reiman Gymnasium.

MILWAUKEE -- The opening day of the 2012 Alverno Classic wasn't kind to the host team, as Alverno College lost both of its matches in three sets today in Reiman Gymnasium.

The Inferno (1-10) fell to Beloit College, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-14, in the first match of the day, and then lost to Augustana College (Ill.), 25-10, 25-13 and 25-21 in the nightcap.

Versus the Buccaneers (1-10) the Inferno jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but the Bucs rallied back and pulled in front 17-12. The Bucs carried the momentum for the come-from-behind first-set win on to the second and third sets for their first match victory of the season.

Freshman Emma Ortner (Tigerton, Wis.) led the Inferno offense with 10 kills on 22 attempts, while senior Reagan Owen (Salina, Kan./Central) had a team-high eight digs and 22 assists.

Against the Vikings (7-2), Alverno was unable to tame its opponent's service attack. The Vikings scored on 17 aces, led by Emily Leazer's nine. Leazer also tallied eight aces in the Vikings' match against Knox College (1-8) earlier in the day.

Alverno finally started to rally in the third set, as a kill by junior Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) tied the set at 21-21, but Augustana closed out the win on four-straight points with a pair of Inferno attack errors and pair of Viking kills.

Gulbronson's five kills on nine attempts led Alverno's offense, while Owen led the defense with seven digs.

Augustana defeated Knox, 3-0, and Knox knocked off Beloit, 3-1, in Friday's other matches.

Alverno concludes pool play in the tournament against Knox at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while Beloit and Augustana square off at 12 p.m. The top two teams meet in the tournament championship match at 4 p.m., while the other two will play the third-place match at 2 p.m.
