Inferno Reclaims Red Rivalry Trophy With 62-42 Victory Over Raiders

Alverno College defeated crosstown-rival MSOE, 62-42, to reclaim the Red Rivalry Trophy from the Raiders tonight in Reiman Gymnasium.

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College defeated crosstown-rival Milwaukee School of Engineering, 62-42, to reclaim the Red Rivalry Trophy from the Raiders tonight in Reiman Gymnasium.

In addition to tying the school record for victories in a season, the Inferno (13-9, 10-5 Northern Athletics Conference) snapped its three-game skid with the convincing victory en route to the season sweep of the visiting Raiders (2-18, 2-12).

Alverno shot nearly 44 percent from the floor in the victory -- its best performance since shooting 46 percent in a win at Edgewood College on Dec. 6 -- while MSOE made just 14 field goals for 34 percent.

After a back-and-forth first half and a 24-24 tie with five minutes to play, the Inferno closed the half on an 11-3 run for the 35-27 lead at intermission.

The hosts added to their lead by scoring the first eight points of the second half and allowed the Raiders to get just as close as 14 points the remainder of the way.

All nine Inferno players in uniform scored in the contest, led by Jamie Hoernke's game and career-high 21 points. Hoernke was nearly perfect as she missed just one field goal (6-of-7) and one free throw (9-of-10) on the night.

Devon Gorman chipped in with a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, as the other Inferno junior-forward was 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from the line.

Rookie Megan Kroll led the Raiders with 11 points, but was held to just 2-of-12 from the field.

The game was also the Inferno's designated 'Play 4Kay' game, as the Inferno players and coaching staff donned pink for the night. The 'Play 4Kay' initiative (formerly known as Pink Zone) is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Alverno needs just one victory in its final three games, or a Lakeland College loss, to clinch a spot in the upcoming NAC tournament. The Inferno will look to clinch a berth on Thursday night at Marian University in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
