Inferno Splits Doubleheader With Rams

After a 4-3 opening-game loss, Alverno College defeated North Central University (Minn.) 7-1 in game two to earn a nonconference split Tuesday afternoon at Alverno Field.

MILWAUKEE -- After a 4-3 opening-game loss, Alverno College defeated North Central University (Minn.) 7-1 in game two to earn a nonconference split Tuesday afternoon at Alverno Field.

Right-hander Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) allowed just a pair of hits and one unearned run in the game-two victory for her third win (3-7), and seventh complete game of the season. The rookie pitcher struck out five and managed to overcome three errors by the Inferno defense, two of which led to the Rams' (9-11) only run of the contest.

The Inferno (6-10) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth after a couple of wild pitches by the Rams' hurler Danielle Anderson (8-6).

Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) reached second base on a double to left field, and Ashleigh Sagat (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) reached on a walk, but both came around to score on the consecutive wild pitches to put the Inferno in front 2-1.

Stef Wilmore's (Elkhart, Ind./Central) solo bomb to left field was one of four hits in the next inning, as the Inferno tacked on five more runs for the 7-1 lead. Dulek retired the side in order in the seventh for the comeback-win.

Villalobos, Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) and Megan Rossi (Hammond, Ind./Morton) each tallied two hits in the game to lead the Inferno.

In the opening game the Inferno was unable to muster a comeback after allowing the Rams to score three first-inning runs. The Rams chased starter Rossi (1-1) after two innings, but added another run (unearned) in the fifth after one of four Inferno errors in the game.

Alverno had the bases loaded with just one out in the second, but were only able to plate one run as Villalobos was hit by pitch to score Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.). Anderson pitched every inning for the Rams in the doubleheader, and got out of the jam with a double play on a line drive to center field that picked off the Inferno at second.

The Inferno tried to rally in the sixth and added two more runs on RBIs by Kresmer and Villalobos, but stranded two runners in the inning and one more in the seventh as Anderson secured the victory for the Rams with four strikeouts.

Wilmore and Kresmer each reached base two times with a pair of hits each in a game that neither team got an extra-base hit.

Alverno will take a day off tomorrow and hit the road for a nonconference doubleheader on Thursday at Lawrence University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. up in Appleton, Wis., with live stats available via athletics.alverno.edu.
