Rabbit woes in the Garden.

Rabbits woes in the Garden.

If you are troubled by rabbits in your garden. Instead of trying to deter them, why not provide some food for them to munch on instead of your vegetables?

Try planting some of these varieties of plants and herbs some distance away from your garden. It will give the rabbits something other than your produce to nibble on, and also introduce you to some new food sources to try with your family.

* Borage: This plant is used to keep rabbits and hornworms (a bug that can defoliate your tomato plants with ease. Further information on hornworms can be found on my Facebook page, look for the posting from July of last year.)
Borage is also good for assisting nursing does (female rabbits). It helps to increase their milk production to feed their litter. Borage additionally helps to remove hairballs from their system. For human consumption, edible flowers can be used fresh, in salads, or candied. The young stems have a cucumber like flavor and is great when lightly steamed.

* Nasturtiums: This is a beautiful self-seeding flower that is edible to both humans and rabbits. Looks beautiful fresh on top of a salad.

* Parsley: Another great plant for both us and rabbits, best when eaten raw. Also can be used in cooking. It helps in enriching the blood.

* Sorrel: This herb is great for rabbits. when they nibble on this plant, it helps them to stay cool in hot and humid weather, thus avoiding overheating. For us, Sorrel is high in Vitamin C. The young tender greens can be used in salads, soups or cooked like spinach.

Try some of these plants near your garden this season, and help keep the rabbits at bay. You can find more information and tips on my Facebook page. "LIKE" us to follow along this growing season and beyond.
