Whitnall High School Environmental Club Prepares for Earth Day

The environmental club is preparing for Earth Day and educating Whitnall High School students about keeping the environment clean.

Earth Day is approaching on Monday, April 22, and the Whitnall High School environmental club is preparing and getting the students excited to participate.

Colleen Barnstable, a senior, is one of the 25 members in the environmental club, and said she heard about the club through a friend, Lauren Peretz, the club's president.

Barnstable said the club is trying to pass a recycling bill for the high school and is making Earth Day buttons and t-shirts for the students to show their support. The club has already participated in the Milwaukee River clean-up as well as highway cleanup.

Peretz, a senior, said she hopes the club is making a difference.

"The club is fairly new, so we haven’t had a chance to do much yet, but this Earth Week, we plan to draw more attention to ourselves and hopefully influence students to become involved in conservation and to care about their environment," she said.

As president, Peretz plans activities, takes care of finances and plans meetings.

"As president, my greatest challenge is convincing students and members to truly care about their environment," she said. "The main reason why I wanted to start this club was because I saw how uneducated and careless many high school students were regarding the environment and conservation.”

Hopefully, the environmental club has the opportunity to spread the word about their club and the importance of keeping the environment clean. In particular, Earth Day will help with their task on getting the students of Whitnall High School educated and involved with helping the community.
