Hot dry summers always take their toll on lawns, but with the extreme drought conditions we experienced this season, it's even more important this year to give your lawn a nutrient boost and get it ready for future outdoor activities.
Start with a soil test whenever possible. It will tell you how much and what type of fertilizer is needed.
For cool season grasses like bluegrass, fescue, and rye, apply a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer, like Milorganite, sometime between late October and Thanksgiving before the ground freezes. Your lawn will get the biggest benefit from late fall fertilization.
Additionally help your lawn by leaving your clippings on the lawn. Small clippings break down quickly and a year’s worth of clippings can equal up to one fertilization which is better for your budget and better for the environment.
Fall fertilization promotes deep roots and a thicker stand of grass without excessive top growth that needs more frequent mowing. Proper fertilization can help you grow a healthier lawn that is better able to fend off weeds and resist insect and disease attacks.
