A Documentary on Obesity in America

A preview of a public service announcement being made by Spencer Schmidt and Michael Radavich.

Whitnall High School seniors Michael Radavich and Spencer Schmidt of the Broadcast Journalism class are in the progress of making a public service announcement on obesity in America.

A public service announcement is advertising that promotes some public cause or informs the community about important information.

Spencer and Michael will be making a video that involves interviews from students, facts, and a students’ aspect of obesity in America and the local community.

Being obese is becoming a huge problem in America. Mike and Spence researched that being overweight means that a person has a BMI of 25 to 29.9. Considered being obese means that a person has a BMI of 30 or above. Also, they found that 35% of all adults are obese in America.

When people become obese, it not only affects them, but their loved ones and the people they work with. Mike and Spencer researched that people can receive diseases and actually lose 7-10 years of their lives because of being obese. It is a serious issue in America and some may wonder how people let themselves get so out of shape.

Kevin Seyedin, a Whitnall Junior, said this about why obesity is a major problem, “Yeah, because it’s increasing the death rate and hurting the efficiency of the work force.”

In America, there are about 200,000 fast food restaurants that usually sell cheap, unhealthy food. It seems like everywhere you go, there is a fast food restaurant. Having so many restaurants like McDonalds available to Americans, it is no surprise that fast food restaurants are one of the causes for the U.S. being overweight.

“I believe that fast food restaurants are a reason America is overweight, because it’s very easy to get unhealthy food, especially for young people,” Billy Schmid, a Whitnall senior and fast food restaurant goer, said this about the reasons for obesity in America.

Although being obese can be harmful to someone’s body, there are plenty of ways to take action and get back into shape. If someone is overweight or obese, eating healthy, exercising or taking diet pills are just a few steps one can take to get on the path to living a better lifestyle.

Spencer and Michael researched this issue because they believe it’s a problem in America. They see it affecting many people, including members of the community.
