Fearing Power Will Be Cut Off, Woman Falls for Scam, Police Say

A caller, who claimed to be from WE Energies, demanded she send $400. She sent half before contacting police.

A resident in the 3600 block of South 33rd Street is out $200 thanks to a scam.

The woman told police someone called her and said they were from WE Energies and threatened to turn off her power if she did not send $400 over the phone.

The woman sent half that amount via MoneyPak before realizing it was a scam.

That and the following incidents were recorded in the Greenfield Police Department incident log for the week of June 17-23:

  • A driver was booked for a fourth operating while intoxicated offense and possession of drug paraphernalia after being stopped by police in the 8300 block of West Layton Avenue at 2:40 a.m. June 17.
  • A 24-year-old man was arrested for concealing PlayStation 3 merchandise down the front of his pants while at Best Buy, 4610 S. 76th St., at 5 p.m. June 17.
  • Two multi-colored hanging baskets were reported stolen from a home in the 3700 block of South 33rd Street at 7:15 p.m. June 17.
  • On June 18, a man and woman who stole two Xbox wireless headsets from Best Buy, 4610 S. 76th St., were arrested at the Southridge Mall Gamestop trying to sell one of the headsets to that store minutes after they successful sold the other headset to the Gamestop on 74th Street in Greenfield.
  • Greenfield paramedics transported a woman to West Allis Memorial Hospital just before midnight June 18 after finding her laying face down on the ground in the 9100 block of West Waterford Square. She was treated for a drug overdose.
  • A resident in the 4600 block of West Tesch Avenue reported a 7-foot tall hanger and a white pot with petunias were stolen sometime before 1 p.m. June 19.
  • Greenfield police and paramedics responded to the 3100 block of West Bridge Street at 1:45 p.m. June 19, to help an unresponsive 30-year-old pregnant woman.
  • A resident in the 5900 block of South 34th Street told police June 19 his stepson stole a bottle of Oxycodone and other belongings from his house while the homeowner had been in the hospital for nearly two weeks.
  • The window of a vehicle was smashed and a purse taken while it was parked in the lot of the YMCA, 11311 W. Howard Ave. sometime before 1 p.m. June 20.
