Gas Leak Leads to Evacuation of Apartment Complex

Residents of the Ravinia Apartments were forced from their units Sunday while We Energies crews shut down a leaky natural gas pipe.

A natural gas leak forced occupants from the on Sunday.

According to Greenfield Fire Department Assistant Chief George Weber, the fire department responded to a report of the underground leak adjacent to the apartment complex. Occupants were evacuated by the city's fire and police departments until We Energies shut off the gas and dug up and replaced a plastic pipe.

According to Brian Manthey of We Energies, it was an off-duty We Energies employee who lives near the apartment complex who detected the smell and called it in at around 9:15 a.m.

The apartment units were cleared and ventilated of natural gas before property was turned over to Ravinia maintenance personnel. Residents returned to their apartments around 11 a.m.

Two days earlier, the fire department was on hand at after a construction crew dug up a gas line to the building while doing excavation work on the parking lot.

There were no reported injuries with either incident.

As for the batch of heavy storms that passed through the area, city crews responded to only a handful of calls:

  • DPW workers removed a tree that fell partially in a road in the Mitchell Highlands subdivision, according to Superintendent Dan Ewert.
  • Firefighters responded to some downed wires Sunday evening.
