Greenfield Police Doing Their Best 'CHiPs' Impersonation

One year after introducing a donated Subaru STI, the Greenfield Police Department is adding a pair of motorcycles to its fleet for the first time ever.

Don't be concerned if you can’t seem to get the CHiPs theme song out of your head or can’t help but flashback to the days of “Ponch” patrolling the California highways.

One year after introducing a donated Subaru STI, the Greenfield Police Department is adding a pair of motorcycles to its fleet for the first time ever.

The department introduced its first motorcycle when Lt. Pat Martin rode a 2009 Harley-Davidson around Dan Jansen Family Fest over the weekend. A brand new Harley is coming soon as well.

Assistant Chief Paul Schlecht said the department is leasing the motorcycles from House of Harley-Davidson in Greenfield. Money previously seized by the department is being used to pay for the leases.

“Several officers that are interested in riding and we’ll be using them for patrol, parades, escorts for motorcycle rides out of the House of Harley,” Schlecht said. “They’re another tool in our tool box. They’re good for traffic enforcement and traffic escorts when a smaller, more nimble vehicle is needed.

“It’s a good publicity tool, too. It will go to events and car shows with the Subaru.”   Several Greenfield officers already have motorcycle licenses. Two will soon be attending training in Indianapolis and two more will do the same in Fort McCoy, WI.
