The Greenfield Police Department has put employees of local businesses, particularly restaurants and convenience stores, on alert of a person or people attempting to scam money from them.

According to police, the fraud begins with a call to the business and follows the following pattern:

  • The caller says he is upper management of from the corporate office and says a customer's wallet has been found and that money was stolen from the wallet.
  • The caller says the customer needs to be compensated and directs the employee to get money from the business.
  • The caller obtains the employee's cell phone number and directs the employee to a drop location, in the area of West Wisconsin Avenue between North 23rd and North 25th Street or on North 27th Street at West North Avenue.
  • The suspect picks up the money from the employee and tells the employee they will be promoted because of their cooperation.

According to police, the caller will use the names of actual employees and managers that work for the business, helping make the scam seem more legitimate.
