Greenfield Police Participate in Mutual Aid in Madison

All costs will be reimbursed by the state, according to department brass.

The Greenfield Police Department has responded to a call for mutual aid at the state Capitol amid the continue protests in Madison.

The department had two officers at the Capitol on Wednesday and four officers on Thursday to help with security as state legislators continue to debate the budget rescue bill put forth by Gov. Scott Walker.

"We are not obligated to send officers if we do not have enough staffing," said Brad Wentlandt, Greenfield Police Deputy Inspector. "All agencies are expected to participate to the extent they can spare personnel."

The department expects to have four officers at the Capitol on Friday and two Saturday.

After thousands of people protested each day last week, the number has dwindled during the past couple of days.

"I can’t predict how many officers will respond in the future because I can’t predict the level of response that will be required in the future," Wentlandt said.

The department made the decision to send officers based on the dire need in Madison, Wentlandt said.

"The agencies surrounding Madison and state agencies have been unable to provide enough officers to meet the need," Wentlandt continued. "Thousands of officers from around the state have been tasked to Madison."

All costs including transportation, mileage, wages, overtime, lodging and meals will be reimbursed by the state.

"We made the decision to assist because it’s the right thing to do and Greenfield may need assistance someday," such as in the event of a natural disaster, Wentlandt said. "Our goal in sending officers is to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all parties involved in the events at the Capitol."
