Greenfield Police Putting Grant to Work on Pedestrian Safety

Officers are targeting pedestrians who show unsafe behavior at crosswalks.

The Greenfield Police Department is using grant money to address pedestrian safety, and Fox 6 has reported on one way officers are getting involved.

Fox 6's piece on how Greenfield Police are using a $2,500 state grant to help make crosswalks safer ran on July 21.

The grant is targeting crosswalk violations, particularly at busy intersections like South 76th Street and Cold Spring Road. Fox 6 reported that on the day they observed the officer in action, pedestrians did not obey crosswalk signals and drivers didn't stop for people in the right of way.

Greenfield Patch earlier this month.

At the time, the Greenfield Police Department had investigated eight personal injury accidents involving pedestrians, a number police found alarming. Sergeant Dave Patrick attributed that to motorists who don't yield to pedestrians.

The grant lets officers target vehicles who do not yield to pedestrians and issue citations. Officers will be in unmarked vehicles, and could give drivers tickets with fines from $63.60 to $145.
