Greenfield's Interim Police Chief Named Police Officer of the Year

Brad Wentlandt earned the recognition from WeTip, a national organization that specializes in taking anonymous crime tips.

WeTip, a national nonprofit organization that takes anonymous crime tips from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands has chosen as its recipient of its 2011 Police Officer of the Year award.

Wentlandt, formerly the department's deputy inspector, has been with the for 21 years, and has been a driving force in implementing the WeTip program in every facet of the department, according a news release from WeTip.

"His dedication to empower the citizens of Greenfield with WeTip's anonymous reporting hotline has helped them to actively become the eyes and ears for law enforcement," the release said. "The department has had constant dialog with WeTip to provide anonymous reporting for any incident that may happen."

WeTip promises total anonymity and confidentiality for anyone who provides a crime tip. According to the release, WeTip has taken more than 510,000 tips in 39 years and has never had a tipster identified.

The timing of the award is particularly nice for Wentlandt, who became interim police chief June 30. In the coming months, the city's Police and Fire Commission the slot vacated by longtime chief retirement, and Wentlandt has made it known .
