Father-Son Car Chase Follows Fight, Police Say

A 57-year-old Greenfield man is facing charges after he allegedly got into a fight with his son, chased him down and sideswiped a friend’s car to try and get him to return home.

Chang H. Choi was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Tuesday with one count of second-degree reckless endangerment of safety. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At noon Saturday, Greenfield police officers were called to Choi’s home in the 4600 block of South 60th Street after he got into an argument with his 23-year-old son where he hit him with a computer keyboard.

Police arrested Choi for domestic violence battery, transported him to the Greenfield Police Department and booked him. He posted the $500 cash bail and was released, and his son waived the 72-hour no-contact prohibition, which allowed the father to return home, according to Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt.

Around 3:30 p.m. police were called to a vehicle accident near 60th and Armour Avenue, which involved Choi and his son.

Choi’s son said he isn’t allowed to leave the house and his parents took away his cell phone, so he contacted a friend via Facebook and had him come pick him up. He said his dad then got into his car and chased them down 60th to West Layton Avenue and into the Mt. Carmel parking lot before the accident.

A man on a motorcycle told police Choi was “driving crazy,” and came within a foot of hitting him before sideswiping the other car. A woman waiting at a nearby bus stop said the victim’s car was then pushed toward her and it nearly hit the bus stop.

Choi told investigators he was concerned about his son and was trying to get him home. He said he didn’t try to hit the car and was only trying to get in front of it to stop it and get his son.

Choi is currently being held in Milwaukee County Jail while awaiting trial.
