Man Arrested for Alleged Drunk Driving Feet Away From Front Door

A short drive home results in a detour to the Greenfield Police Department for a Greenfield man who allegedly drove drunk and passed out with his car parked in front of his apartment.

A 32-year-old Greenfield man could have avoided his first drunk-driving arrest by getting a ride home from a friend or walking home the bar.

He also could have just parked his car and walked into his apartment.

Instead, Greenfield police arrested him for alleged drunk driving just a few feet from his front door.

According to the report, an anonymous caller contacted police to report a car parked in the roadway in the 3500 block of South Rivershire Drive for about an hour in the early morning hours of March 26.

When police arrived, they found the suspect passed out in the driver’s seat while the vehicle was parked but running and with the lights on. The police officer opened the door and tried to verbally wake the man several times before shaking the man’s left shoulder.

At that time, the suspect became physically combative, mumbled and slurred his speech. The police officer asked the man to exit the vehicle again, and when the suspect put his hand on the shifter in an apparent attempt to put the car into drive, the officer removed the man from the car, while another officer pointed an electronic control device at the subject.

Once handcuffed, the suspect told police he had been out drinking at a friend’s house — he later said he had been drinking at , which is less than a mile from his home — and that he had driven to his residence, which he was parked in front of. When officers asked him how much he had to drink, he responded, “Too much.”

He was arrested for operating while intoxicated, which would be his first offense if convicted.
