Man Charged With Pepper-Spraying Pet Store Manager

The suspect, who shares a name with a famous Star Trek character, sprayed a manager after the employee tried to stop him from stealing an aquarium filter.

James Kirk is facing felony charges after he used pepper spray on a Greenfield pet store manager while trying to shoplift from the store.

Don't worry Trekkies, it's not that James Kirk.

James B. Kirk, a 28-year-old Milwaukee man not to be confused with Captain James T. Kirk, a Star Trek character made famous by actor William Shatner, was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Thursday with one count of retail theft and one count of use of Oleoresin while committing a crime. If convicted, he faces up to nearly seven years in prison and $20,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Kirk went into and was spotted by employees trying to steal an aquarium filter from the store. Staff called police and a manager tried to stop him at the door, but a scuffle ensued and Kirk pulled out pepper spray and sprayed the victim in his face.

When police arrived the manager was still chasing Kirk, who was then arrested. He told police he went to the store looking for something to steal and he sprayed the manager in the face after they got into an altercation at the door.

He’s currently being held in Milwaukee County Jail on $1,000 bond.
