During the Greenfield Police Department’s interrogation for the stabbing last month, Vanderberg insisted detectives check his cell phone, stating messages from the victim would prove Vanderberg acted in self-defense, according to Greenfield Interim Police chief Brad Wentlandt.

Detectives found photos of Vanderberg holding guns, a felony offense for a convicted felon. Greenfield police had the phone forensically examined and got a warrant, which they tried to serve yesterday.

After Vanderberg’s parents were removed from the house, Vanderberg barricaded himself inside. Because the house is located in Milwaukee, Greenfield police deferred to Milwaukee police, who elected to have their tactical team take over, resulting in Vanderberg being gassed out.

No one was injured in the standoff, though police officers did shoot a dog during the incident. Vanderberg was turned over to Greenfield police and is now in custody.

Vanderberg has been in and out of the Milwaukee County Jail and House of Corrections. Back in 2010, he was found guilty of a felony drug charge for manufacturing and/or delivering narcotics.

In 2007, he was found guilty of intentionally mistreating an animal, a misdemeanor, and served six months in the house of corrections with work release. Later that year, he was charged with felony forgery, a charge that was later dismissed.

The following year, Vanderberg pled guilty to misdemeanor bail jumping and theft – a felony charge of bail jumping was dismissed – and he was sentenced to one year in the house of corrections and two years probation.

In 2009, he spent 10 days in the house of corrections for possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.
