Man Who Trapped Greenfield Officer's Arm in Car Window Charged

Suspect was caught trying to cook heroin in the Best Buy parking lot Sunday before leading police on a chase through the city.

A 24-year-old Wind Lake man is facing charges after he tried to trap a Greenfield police officer’s arm inside his window and drive away after he was caught attempting to cook heroin in the parking lot.

Dylan T. Helback was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Friday with one count of attempting to flee an officer and one count of obstructing an officer. If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison and $20,000 in fines.

At 4:57 p.m. Sunday, police saw Helback sitting in his car in the parking lot of Best Buy, 4610 S. 76th St. and looking down at his lap. An officer parked his car behind Helback's and as two officers approached his car, he pushed something off his lap and appeared nervous.

Helback had a Gatorade bottle with what appeared to be water in it with the cap off and turned upside down with more water in it. When asked what it was, he said he was trying to cool off his water.

When an officer told him that didn’t make sense and asked him to get out of the car, Helback refused. The officer then tried to open the door, but it was locked. The officer then tried reaching in the window to unlock it, but Helback closed the window on the officer's arm.

The officer grab Helback’s collar and told him to open the window again, which Helback did. The officer then asked Helback to come out of the car again, but he refused.

The officer again reached into the car to unlock it, but Helback trapped his arm in the window again. This time, however, Helback started the car and attempted to put it in gear with the officer trapped. Another officer was able to smash the passenger window with a baton and the trapped officer was able to get his arm out before Helback left.

Helback drove nearly 40 miles per hour out of the parking lot and then turned onto West Layton Avenue and onto South 74th Street.

He dodged through heavy traffic while doing more than 60 miles per hour. Police lost sight of him near 74th and Edgerton Avenue, so they contacted the Town of Norway Police Department.

The Greenfield officers then waited with Racine police officials until Helback arrived home, at which time they blocked his driveway and went to arrest him. He tried to swallow some pills before being taken into custody, but an officer was able to swat them from his hand.

Helback admitted he was trying to cook heroin when the officers spotted him and ran because he didn’t want to go to jail. He’s currently being held in Milwaukee County Jail while awaiting trial.
