Man With 4-Year-Old in Van Arrested for Driving While on Drugs

The 25-year-old Greenfield man was asleep at the wheel of a minivan parked in a parking lot with the keys in the ignition, police said.

A 25-year-old Greenfield man was arrested for driving while under the influenced of drugs after witnesses told police he fell asleep in a parking lot with a 4-year-old child in the backseat.

According to the Greenfield Police Department report, officers responded to a call from someone who said they saw the 25-year-old driving erratically in the parking lot of Fashion Bug, 4260 S. 76th St., at approximately 2:55 p.m. Saturday.

The witness said the driver was having difficulty keeping his eyes open.

When police arrived on the scene, an officer found the 25-year-old man and his 25-year-old female passenger both asleep in the front seat with the keys in the ignition. The woman’s 4-year-old son was in the backseat of the minivan.

The couple told police that they had been to the methadone clinic earlier that day, and the man told police he used to use heroin but had not taken any illegal substances that day.

The man failed field sobriety tests, according to the report.

Police found a hypodermic needle cap on the floor board of the driver’s side of the minivan and a spoon with possible drug residue in the woman’s purse.

The man was expected to have his case presented to the District Attorney’s office on Wednesday.
