Storm Damage? Let's See It

The strong thunderstorms caused issues throughout the city and its surrounding areas Sunday afternoon.

Strong thunderstorms with heavy lightning swept through the area Sunday afternoon causing all sorts of issues in Greenfield and the surrounding communities.

According to Chief Jon Cohn:

  • Greenfield sent a ladder truck and battalion chief to a house fire in Franklin near 35th Street and Ryan Road, where a house was reportedly struck by lightning. Cohn said the house's occupants were evacuated.
  • A round the same time, Greenfield fire personnel were at a Greenfield home in the 4300 block of South 36th Street near the intersection of 36th Street and Cold Spring Road, where lightning struck a house and knocked off a chimney and put a hole in a house's roof. The department tarped over the hole to prevent further damage from rain.
  • Just prior to that, Greenfield fire crews were at a rollover accident on I-894 near the Forest Home on-ram. The occupants were safe.

According to Division of Public Works Superintendent Dan Ewert, some street lights from 35th Street to 43rd Street on Cold Spring Road were blown out and will be repaired Monday.

  • the 4600 block of South Brookdale Drive;
  • the area of 51st Street and Layton Avenue, where the eastbound street was closed;
  • the 4700 block of South 35th Street
  • the 5000 block of South 43rd Street, where officers shut down the road;
  • several sections of 108th Street, including near Cold Spring Road and the 4200 block;
  • the 4100 block of South 112th Street;
  • and the area near West Layton Avenue and the Root River Parkway.
