Woman Injured After Crashing Stolen SUV, Complaint Says

Shayna M. Stewart Funk, 21, of Greenfield, faces several charges after two-county police chase.

A 21-year-old Greenfield woman who received a compound elbow fracture after crashing a stolen SUV faces several charges after being accused of leading New Berlin police on a two-county chase, according to a criminal complaint.

Shayna M. Stewart Funk was charged Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court with taking a vehicle without consent, fleeing a police officer and obstructing an officer. If convicted, she faces up to 5-1/4 years in prison and $30,000 in fines. She remains free on $1,500 bail.

New Berlin police officers received a report of a man stealing items from a vehicle in the 13400 block of West National Avenue. A police officer caught up to the 2002 silver Chevy SUV, which was driven by Stewart Funk, and pulled over a couple.

As the officer ordered the passenger, later identified as Stewart Funk’s boyfriend, out of the vehicle, Stewart Funk slammed the accelerator and sped away from the officer, according to the complaint.

A backup officer started chasing the vehicle and saw it drive through a flashing four-way red light at National Avenue and 124th Street at 80 mph. The vehicle sped 90 mph through a red light at Highway 100, which is when dispatchers advised the police officer that the vehicle was stolen.

The vehicle continued driving on the 894 bypass, reaching speeds of 100 mph, and exited onto Greenfield Avenue at high speeds, according to the complaint. The couple escaped the police officer when it turned past a construction barricade, the complaint states. When the dust cleared, the officer saw fresh tire tracks and other New Berlin officers continued the chase.

Officers soon found the abandoned SUV, which had crashed into a brick and concrete business sign in the 8400 block of West Greenfield Avenue. Stewart Funk was found nearby walking with no shoes. She was stumbling and was ordered to the ground at gunpoint.

Stewart Funk was dazed, bleeding and had a compound fracture near her elbow, the complaint states.

“I am sorry, he told me to take off,” Stewart Funk told a New Berlin officer.

The woman was transported to Froedtert Hospital. Drug paraphernalia and electronics were found in the vehicle, the compliant states.

Stewart Funk later told police that her boyfriend picked her up in the SUV so she could obtain and use heroin at a park in Milwaukee. She didn’t remember anything – including driving, running away or being in New Berlin – except for crashing and hitting her head, according to the complaint.

Her boyfriend filled her in on the missing pieces after he was taken into custody, she told police, according to the complaint. The boyfriend has not yet been charged in the incident.
