"The purpose of this meeting is to show people that, despite what the governor and legislature might say, there are other options to balance our budget other than making devastating cuts to our public schools," said Tom Beebe, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Alliance for Excellent Schools, one of the event's organizers. "This is not the time to snatch away opportunities from our young people, but rather the point where we need to invest in an even higher quality of education."

Some estimates in Walker's proposal have school aid being cut by $834 million during the next two years.

“This is a critical turning point in the futures of our young people and the long-term success of our state and local economy," Beebe said. "We have the ability to come up with a better solution. We do not have to go down this path."

WAES is currently behind a campaign to raise the state sales tax to help offset the budget deficit. According to the "A Penny for Kids" campaign, a one-cent increase in sales tax will amount to $850 million in increased revenue each year.
