Greenfield Health Board Wants Less Fluoride in Water

Board of Health members want to see a reduction in the amount of fluoride the Milwaukee Water Works adds to the water. Fluoride is good for teeth, but in high amounts can cause damage to the enamel.

In other Health Board news on Thursday, board members briefly discussed water fluoridation as Milwaukee Ald. Jim Bohl continues to push for ending the practice for Milwaukee Water Works, which serves Greenfield.

Rausch told the board that he would be in favor of reducing the amount of fluoride in water from 1.0 parts per million to .7 parts per million, but not a total removal of fluoride.

"I would be definitely in support in reviewing the optimal dose of fluoride," said board member Leon Saryan, a toxicologist. "I'm thinking the less that we can put in, the better, as long as it's not too little."

Too much fluoride causes fluorosis, a decay of dental enamel. Along with the water Greenfield residents drink, fluoride is in toothpaste and foods.
