Greenfield in Support of a Milwaukee Aerotropolis

The concept of building up the Mitchell Airport area into a hub commerce and development was unveiled earlier this week.

Greenfield is part of a regional organization called the Milwaukee Aerotropolis Corp., an organization interested in working together to develop the area near Mitchell Airport.

Earlier this week, the organization held a presentation and press conference about Aerostropolis Milwaukee, a concept that would make the airport the central core or hub of a multimodal transportation system for economic and business development within the region.

Other municipalities involved are Milwaukee, South Milwaukee, Oak Creek, Franklin, Cudahy, St. Francis and Greendale.

John Kasarda, a professor at the University of North Carolina, created the "strategic roadmap" for the aerotropolis, and in a story by The Business Journal, he suggested Mitchell Airport build up its reputation as Chicago's third airport and strengthen its connections to the Port of Milwaukee, Amtrak and the Interstate.

Executive director of Gateway to Milwaukee, the group pushing for the creation of an aerotropolis in Milwaukee, told WUWM Milwaukee Public Radio that the process to create an aerotropolis could take years, even decades, but said organizers will soon ask local businesses what improvements could be made to the area to improve commerce and that his group could get get moving in the right direction within five years.

In a story by NOW Newspapers, Greendale Village President John Hermes, who is also the vice president of Milwaukee Gateway Aerotropolis Corp., said being part of the proposed improvement in the area would not strip local municipalities of their identity.
