How Do You Conquer The Flu?

The flu season is raging this year, but how do you ease the symptoms. Here's what some experts and a few of our readers had to say. Feel free to add your ideas in the comments section.

Looking for ways to ease up those flu symptoms?

Join the crowd. Overall in Wisconsin, activity the flu is considered high now, while it was considered low at this time in 2011, according to Flu Trends.

According to this week's CDC Flu activity report, influenza levels are on the increase across the country.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers the following information:

WebMD offers up a variety of home remedies to ease your flu symptoms and one of our bloggers offers some simple solutions to those nasty flu symptoms, including:

  • Take a warm shower: Getting in a warm shower with the bathroom door closed works as your own personal sauna. The steamy bathroom helps to open your airways and moisten and thin the mucus in your sinuses.
  • Increase liquids: Stay well-hydrated by drinking at least 8 cups (64 ounces) of water each day. Water keeps your respiratory system hydrated, which helps to liquefy thick mucus that builds up with a respiratory infection. Some findings show that hot liquids may be superior to cold liquids in upper respiratory infections. Other liquids can be added, but avoid coffee, tea with caffeine, or alcoholic beverages as these liquids may cause dehydration.

But we also wondered what home remedies you use to ease the symptoms. Here's what our readers had to say when we posed the question on Facebook.

Karen Jensen Pure Honey and Cinnamon!! worked pretty good for me~I added it to my tea!! I do about 1/8 cup honey and 1 tap honey or to your taste!! I put it in the microwave for 15 seconds to liquify it!! 3 times a day.

Darcy Maranger Mohr Flu fighter tea from The Grind. I don't know what's in it but it makes me feel better.

Hot water with lots of honey and lemon really sooths the throat and makes one feel better. Also at the onset I spray my mouth with Z-cam and take multi cold tab and if taken right away for a couple days, there are times it never gets worse, but if I wait until I am really sick then take meds it takes longer to rid myself of flu or bad colds as well.
