Patch reader Mike Hembrook said he had been stuck between the airport spur and College Avenue for over an hour.

"Just a crawl and people are cutting everyone off, plus broke down cars every 100 feet," he said.

As predicted, traffic jams are reaching into Racine County because I-94 is shut down at Rawson Avenue.

Cameras from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are showing lines of vehicles snaking north into Milwaukee County from the 7-Mile Road exit. Local law enforcement is warning drivers that back-ups could extend as far south as Highway 20.

Oak Creek residents should expect some heavy traffic congestion on local roads this weekend.

Interstate 94 shut down at Rawson Ave. at 9 p.m. Friday and won't reopen until 9 a.m. Sunday as construction workers install a culvert pipe across the freeway.

Law enforcement officials are expecting major traffic problems in the areas of Seven Mile Rd., Highway G, Highway V and Highway 38. The Wisconsin DOT believes the Interstate 94 traffic will be backed up as far south as Hwy 20, Caledonia Police Chief Toby Schey said.

According to the DOT, detour routes will take motorists through Oak Creek:

  • Traffic on I-94 west (northbound) will be directed to exit at 27th Street (at Racine/Milwaukee County Line) and head north to College Avenue, turn right (east) on College Avenue and continue east to access the I-94 west (NB) entrance ramp.
  • Traffic on I-94 east (SB) will be directed to exit at Rawson Avenue, head west on Rawson Avenue, turn left (south) on to 27th Street and continue south to the I-94 east (SB) entrance ramp at Racine/Milwaukee County Line.

The westbound airport spur (Highway 119) will be also closed to vehicles exiting the General Mitchell International Airport during this full closure of I-94.

Drivers will exit the airport at Howell Avenue and face detours to get to the freeway.

Is the Ryan Road southbound/eastbound on ramp open? I could take S 76 St. to Ryan road and then go east and pick up the freeway there. Since I live near 76 st I was hoping to avoid the freeway and pick it up after the detour. Any advice on my plan or should I just pray for rain?
