City Says 'No' to Gold-Buying Drive-Thru

The small kiosk-like building on College Avenue and 27th Street will remain vacant for now.

A small building near the corner of 27th Street and College Avenue that was once a drive-thru coffee shop will not reopen as a second-hand jewelry and gold shop.

The Greenfield Common Council on Wednesday unanimously denied Guillermo Guerrero’s proposal to open the shop, which would have primarily been a place for customers to sell unwanted gold and jewelry.

On Wednesday, the four alderpersons who voted – Alderperson Linda Lubotsky was absent – had concerns about where the purchased jewelry would be stored. Guerrero, through an interpreter indicated it would be kept in a safe. The alderpersons weren’t fond of that idea.

The Jewelry Repair Shop was the previous tenant. That shop focused more on repairing broken jewelry, but the building has been vacant since June 2012 because that owner had his application for a secondhand jewelry dealer license denied after officials found false and misleading information on the application.

The drive-thru building at 6205 S. 27th St. at the northeast corner of the Greenfield Emporium Square shopping center is limited as to the types of businesses it can accommodate. Mayor Michael Neitzke said maybe another coffee shop owner would be interested in leasing the building.

Neitzke added the entire shopping center could use some improvements. Drug Emporium, a former co-anchor tenant, moved out years ago, as did Sears Hardware, which has since been replaced by Dollar Tree.

“That’s one of those areas that could clearly use some revitalization,” Neitzke said.

I don't think the building should be limited as to watch can occupy it because any business could be resourceful with the small space and drive-thru.
