15-Year-Old Greenfield Bicyclist Dies After Getting Struck by SUV

Brittany Barnstable, a Whitnell High School student, died as a result of her injuries Sunday.

A 15-year-old Greenfield girl, who was riding her bicycle in New Berlin, has died as a result of injuries suffered when she was struck by an SUV on Saturday, according to Patch's media partners WISN 12.

Brittany Barnstable, a Whitnall High School freshman, was riding her bike on the New Berlin Recreation Trail Saturday afternoon when she was hit by the SUV, sources confirm.

Officials at Whitnall High School shared the news of the girl's death with the student body on Monday morning. They wore red shirts in her honor and after school they took a photo in her memory.

Brittany played on the school's soccer team and was honored by her teammates and schoolmates before Monday's road match at South Milwaukee. The Whitnall student body also wore red shirts at school in her honor Monday.

In a letter to parents, principal Jackie Winter said counselors and staff will be offering grief support to students on Monday.

"It is with great sadness that we informing you that one of our 9th graders was involved in an accident on Saturday, suffered serious injuries and passed away today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this difficult time," the letter said. "We share this news with heavy hearts, but know that the Whitnall Community will ban together to support the family during this painful time."

Whitnall School District superintendent Lowell Holtz said school officials learned about Brittany's death Sunday night during an athletic and academic banquet.

"I can’t even imagine what family the family is going through right now," Holtz said. "But the districts support each other and we're going to help these kids through this process."
