Election 2011: Bernard Shaw, Whitnall School Board

Current board treasurer seeks another term.

A 20-year resident of Hales Corners, current board treasurer Bernard Shaw, the father of a former district student, is seeking another term.

Shaw, 10160 Whitnall Court, sees the top priority of the board as “continuing to provide the highest quality for our students in the district, given the environment and resource constraints that we are facing from Madison.”

“We continue to assess what the needs are of the district at each individual school level based on what the student population is.”

He added that the board is constantly reviewing curriculum to make sure the district has course content that prepares are students for the future.

"We continue to assess what our cost structures are and make sure we are working within a very defined and tight budget,” Shaw said.

One way Shaw said he would look to cut costs is by looking at cross utilization of personnel. In addition, “any time there is a retirement or someone leaves, we assess whether that position should be filled or if it can be handled in some other way,” he said.

“I feel that I want to continue on the school board because we have a lot of unfinished work that has been started by this board. There are a lot of things in transition and I want to complete the job.”

In addition to his experience on the board, Shaw said his position with the Public Funds department at Associated Bank gives him the opportunity to see the “best practices” of various school districts and then apply them at Whitnall.
