School District Reports No Problems With Absentee Teachers

Greenfield superintendent says absentees have not increased this week, today.

While some school districts around the state because of teachers calling in sick in protest of Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill, the Greenfield School District has had no such issues.

"I am pleased to report we have seen no increase in absences this week," Greenfield Superintendent Conrad Farner said.

"Our attendance policies and expectations are the same every day of the year.Β  We expect staff members to honor their contracts, and just as importantly, their personal and professional obligation to meet the needs of our students."

Farner said he has not had any conversations with teachers regarding concerns over the bill, "in part because our educators are so focused on meeting students’ needs, but also because everything is speculative until the budget bill actually becomes law," he said.

Farner also said it is difficult to speculate how the bill would impact the district financially both now and down the road.

"Obviously employees will likely be paying more for benefits and have a significant pay reduction if we pay more into the state retirement system," Farner said. "If the collective bargaining laws change, there could be a significant impact, but until we know more and have a chance to examine what any changes really mean, I cannot predict what the impact will be, financial or otherwise."
