School District Waiting to See How New Budget Plays Out

Greenfield Superintendent Conrad Farner has high hopes that district will avoid major layoffs.

The Greenfield School District believes it will avoid massive layoffs in the wake of Gov. Scott Walker's budget proposal, which he is expected to deliver tomorrow afternoon.

It is widely believed that schools could see a reduction in state aid by as much as $900 million over the next two years and that the proposal could lower the amount of revenue that districts can collect by hundreds of dollars per student.

"We do not anticipate many layoffs, perhaps some partial layoffs, (but it is) too early to tell. ... It is too soon to know the impact of any of the governor’s proposals," Greenfield Superintendent Conrad Farner said.

Last week, Whitnall Superintendent Lowell Holtz announced his district and that the decrease in state aid would balance out with the expected reduction in teacher benefits as part of the budget-repair bill.
