What Could the 2013-14 Greenfield School Day Look Like?

Interim Superintendent David Ewald provided School Board members with a working draft of the school days at all three educational levels.

Weeks after the Greenfield School Board decided to change school start times for more than half its schools, including a later start for the high school, board members were given a glimpse at how that schedule could look in 2013-14.

Interim Superintendent David Ewald laid out a draft of when each school office could open and close, when teacher workdays could begin and end and when students would begin classes.

The Board voted for a change, now “How is that going to work next year?” Ewald said at Monday’s School Board meeting. “This is a draft. It gives us a sense of how it might work, and what (administrators) think is a good way to make it work.”

Under Ewald's draft, Greenfield High School’s office would be open from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the teacher workday from 7:25 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. The Board voted last month to change that school’s student start time from 7:10 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., with the end of the day moving to 2:41 p.m.

The Middle School will start 12 minutes earlier next year, also at 7:30 a.m. like the high school. Its office, as proposed by Ewald’s draft, would be open from 6:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and the teacher work day would be from 7:10 a.m. to 3:10 a.m.

All four elementary schools – now scheduled to hold class from 8:45 a.m. to 3:26 p.m. – would have office hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the draft, with teacher workdays from 7:35 a.m. to 3:35 p.m.

Morning junior kindergarten would be from 8:45-11:21 a.m.; afternoon junior kindergarten would be from 12:50-3:26 p.m.

Early release days at the high and middle schools would end at 12:41 p.m. and 1:26 p.m. at the elementary schools. Morning kindergarten would not be impacted by early release days, but afternoon kindergarten would start two hours earlier and run from 10:50 a.m. to 1:26 p.m., according to the draft.

Ewald said the preliminary draft is subject to change.
