Whitnall Students Honor Sandy Hook Victims

Over the last six days, people across the country have had the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy in their hearts and minds, including right here in Greenfield.

On Tuesday, at the varsity basketball game, the Whitnall High School student section, which usually selects a theme for each game, chose to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting by dressing in that school’s colors.

Seniors and juniors wore green while sophomores and freshmen wore white.

“We thought that would be a really good way to show our support and show people that they are not alone out there,” senior Connor Touhey said.

Touhey said the theme was chose by several seniors, and as many as 80 students participated. He added the Whitnall student senate is finalizing details for a fundraiser for the victims’ families in Newtown.

He also said the tragedy really scared him and his classmates. Not in a way that they were fearful something like that would happen at Whitnall, but in a broader scope.

“When it’s kindergartners and first graders, where does it stop?” he said. “You hear about the shootings all the time, but you never think it’s going to happen to little kids … It’s devastating. That was the feeling from a lot of high school kids: a lot of anger and being scared.”
