Baseball Book Discussion at Clement Manor

Larry Baldassaro will discuss his book Beyond DiMaggio: Italian Americans in Baseball, at Clement Manor Center for Enrichment on Thursday.

Baldassaro’s newly published book has been called a major  contribution to American sports history. In a larger sense it’s a cultural history, a slice of America involving the waves of immigrants who came to America in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the struggles and prejudice they endured — and eventually overcame, on to their rise in sports such as baseball, not only to acceptance, but in many cases to fame and glory.

The grandson of Italian immigrants, Baldassaro grew up in Chicopee, Mass., where he played high school, American Legion, and semi-pro baseball. He is a Professor Emeritus of Italian at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His book draws on over 50 interviews with players, coaches, managers and executives as he traced the impact of Italian Americans on baseball.
