Former Whitnall Quarterback Currently Third on Badgers Depth Chart

His talent and another's injury have elevated him, but the team's preference is to have Joel Stave redshirt this fall.

According to multiple sources, the Wisconsin Badgers football coaching staff would prefer that former  quarterback Joel Stave redshirt this fall and maintain four years of eligibility while honing his skills.

But according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Badger blog, Stave will likely enter Wisconsin's season-opener with Nevada-Las Vegas on Thursday in Madison as the team's third-string quarterback behind starter Russell Wilson and redshirt freshman Joe Brennan.

Stave, presumably, would only play in an emergency in order for the Badgers to preserve his redshirt status.

Stave was elevated to third on the depth chart thanks to redshirt sophomore Jon Budmayr's right hand injury, according to the blog post.

A recent story on Madison.com discussed Stave's rise from lightly regarded recruit to third-string quarterback on one of the nation's best college teams.
