Girls High School Basketball Season has Tipped Off

The Whitnall Falcons began play Friday, and the Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks start Tuesday.

The Whitnall girls basketball season started over the Thanksgiving break as the Falcons fell to Cedarburg, 66-46, Friday in the Brookfield East Tournament.

Junior guard Ashley Markowiak scored 16 points to lead Whitnall, which played in the tournament's consolation game Saturday against the host school and rebounded for a 52-42 victory.

Jackie Gruszka led Whitnall with 14 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. She was followed by Rachael Shulta's 12 and Markowiak's 11. Elena Busalacchi grabbed 10 rebounds and Markowiak made four steals.

The Falcons resume their schedule when they

went 11-11 a year ago, according to Greenfield NOW's season preview.
