Greenfield Football Team Falls to 0-2 With Loss to Pius

The Hawks moved the ball in a nonconference game against Pius on Thursday, but couldn't contain Popes' running back Shannon Nunnery.

The Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks put together a better effort in the second week of the season, but the result was the same.

After losing to Germantown in last Friday's opener, Greenfield fell to Pius, 25-13, Thursday night at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

After trailing, 13-0, after one quarter, the Hawks showed signs of life when Xavier Copeland scored on a 57-yard burst midway through the second. The extra-point cut the Popes' lead to 13-7.

Pius, however, scored before the half ran out to take a 19-7 advantage into intermission.

Greenfield scored midway through the third, this time on a 10-yard run by Matt Braatz, but Pius pulled away with a final touchdown with 2 minutes, 32 seconds left.

Copeland finished with 109 yards on just eight carries. Pius running back Shannon Nunnery, however, had 158 and three touchdowns.

Up next for the Hawks is crosstown rival Whitnall at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Greenfield High School. The Falcons lost their opener to Slinger, and play again Friday night.
