Greenfield Golf Team Finally Gets Going

A wet spring that washed out plenty of competitions has led to a busy stretch for the Hustlin' Hawk golfers.

The Greenfield High School golf team was busy last week making up for lost time due to the extremely wet start to the 2013 season.

The Hawks are fielding a young and inexperienced team this spring with seniors Alec Piekarski and Justin Cancilla bringing the most varsity experience and teaming with first-time varsity players seniors Jaron Litza and Trevor Holmes and sophomores Ben Fularczyk, Ryan Hensiak and Ben Wachniak.

The team played seven matches in seven days, with results consistent with those of an inexperienced team. Scores started off higher than hoped for but have shown a steady decrease along the way and glimpses of what is needed to shoot consistently competitive scores at the varsity level.

The season finally got under way April 25 with the first conference mini of the season at New Berlin Hills Golf Course. The team struggled to a score of 199 to finish sixth. Litza led the team with a 47.

The next day the Hawks competed in the Oakwood Invite and finished 14th out of 17 teams with a score of 399. Litza and Cancilla led the team with scores of 97.

The second mini of the season was held at Whitnall Golf Course. The team score of 196 was slightly better but not good enough to get out of the sixth position. Cancilla and Hensiak shot identical 47s.

The Hawks followed that up with a windy and tough round at Morningstar Golf Course, where they shot a 198. Piekarski and Hensiak each posted scores of 47, one stroke better than Jaron’s 48.

The best weather of the season welcomed the team to Nagawaukee Golf Course, where the Hawks shot a season-low 185. Wachniak and Piekarski led with 45s.

The team got wet again the next day as they headed back to New Berlin Hills. Jaron continued to lower strokes and led the team with a 44 as Greenfield shot a 193.

The last of the seven straight events turned out to be a very wet experience. The Hawks headed back to Morningstar Golf Course for the Greendale Invite, where cold temperatures and rain made for miserable conditions.

Greenfield scored a 368, its best 18-hole total of the season, with Piekarski's solid round of 82 leading the way.

This week the team plays Tuesday in the last conference mini of the season at Dretzka GC, and Thursday it begins the 27-hole conference tournament with nine holes at The Broadlands Golf Course.
