Greenfield's Young Track Stars Shine at WIAA Regional

Several underclassmen stood out at Monday's meet at South Milwaukee. And at the Mukwonago Regional, Whitnall seniors Meredith Heller and Sam Mentkowski kept plugging along.

Greenfield’s young track stars were bright once again, this time at Monday’s WIAA regional meet at South Milwaukee.

Sophomore Madison Kohl was the champion in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.62 seconds, just one of a handful of top performances by Greenfield underclassmen.

Sophomore Tuyet Nguyen, Greenfield’s top performer at last week’s Woodland Conference meet, was second in the triple jump with a 36 feet, ½ inch, 5 ½ inches behind the winning mark. She was also third in the 100 hurdles in 16.62 and fourth in the long jump with a 16-9 ¾.

The top four placewinners in each event qualified for Thursday’s sectional meet at Wisconsin Lutheran. That meet begins at 4 p.m.

And Greenfield’s youngsters stood out. Freshman Keely Hanley ran second in the 1,600 in 5:42.41, just fractions of a second slower than the winning freshman from Franklin, Jensen Ritzow. Hanley also ran third in the 800 in 2:29.06.

Also second were fellow Greenfield sophomores Marcus Myers in the long jump in 20-6 ¾, Andy Sabinash in the 1,600 in 4:52.72 and Alex Ljubic in the discus with a 122-07.

Additional runners-up were Greenfield junior Stephanie Van Wieri in the high jump (4-10), senior Kyle Schahczinski in the 300 hurdles (41.40), junior Robert Hopeful in the triple jump (42-0), and the boys 3,200 relay (8:54.26).

Whitnall has handful of qualifiers

At the Mukwonago Regional, Whitnall senior Meredith Heller kicked off her postseason with a win in the 300 hurdles in 49.35. She also teamed with Jenny Lawton, Robyn Roberts and Jasmine Bickerstaff for third in the 1,600 relay 4:14.90.

Senior Sam Mentkowski was second in the 400 in 51.27, less than a tenth of a second off the pace, and the 1,600 relay team that included Mentkowski, Joe Alexopolus, Paul Howard and Mike Grim was second in 3:25.78, about two-tenths of a second behind the regional champs.

Other Falcons qualifying for the sectional were junior Jasmine Van Tine, who was fourth in the 3,200 (12:30.46), Bickerstaff, who ran third in the 100 hurdles (17.43) and the 3,200 relay of Roberts, Kim Hurst, Alyssa Woo and Jenny Bahling, which was fourth (10:37.67).
