Greenfield, Whitnall Play in WIAA Regional Baseball Finals Tuesday

Both the Hustlin' Hawks and Falcons are seeded third in their respective sectionals.

Sixty-four teams hoping to be among the final eight to advance to the state tournament are in action Tuesday for WIAA summer baseball regional finals.

Among them are Greenfield and Whitnall, a pair of third-seeded teams in different sectionals having similar seasons.

Whitnall is 17-12 and finished fourth in the Woodland Conference Black Division after going 19-15 a year ago. Greenfield surpassed its 13-18 record of 2010 by going 17-13 and finishing tied for second in the Woodland Black.

Whitnall has not been to the state tournament since 2001. For Greenfield, it's been even longer. The Hustlin' Hawks have not played at state since 1984.

Here is a breakdown of each team’s Tuesday opponent and sectional:

Greenfield – Sectional 8

First-Round Foe: Greenfield will play host to sixth-seeded Cudahy (9-18) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Greenfield beat Cudahy twice earlier this year.

Sectional Team to Beat: A toss-up between defending WIAA champion Franklin (23-7), which is seeded second, and top-seeded Oak Creek (25-4), winner of the Greater Metro Conference.

Rest of the Sectional: South Milwaukee (14-16), the sectional host, is seeded fourth and hosts fifth-seeded Greendale (12-15) on Tuesday. Franklin hosts seventh-seeded St. Thomas More (11-18) and Oak Creek hosts eighth-seeded St. Francis.

Tuesday’s regional winners will play at South Milwaukee on Friday with sectional semifinal games slated for 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The sectional final is 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Should Greenfield win Tuesday, it would play at 1:30 p.m. Friday against either Franklin or St. Thomas More. The Hawks lost to Franklin, 6-2, in a regional final last July.

Whitnall – Sectional 6

First-Round Foe: The Falcons will host sixth-seeded Mukwonago (12-17), a team they defeated, 12-5, on July 15, at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Sectional Team to Beat: Waukesha West (22-10) is the top-seed and reached the state semifinals a year ago. Muskego deserves honorable mention after going 22-8 this summer.

Rest of the Sectional: Fourth-seeded Kettle Moraine (12-18) and fifth-seeded Catholic Memorial (11-18) meet Tuesday. Top-seeded Waukesha West, the sectional host, will also host Waukesha South (2-24), seeded eighth, Tuesday as second-seeded Muskego hosts seventh-seeded Waukesha North (12-18).

The sectional will be at Waukesha West on Friday with semifinal games slated for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. with the final at 7:30 p.m.

Whitnall, if victorious Tuesday, would play either Muskego or Waukesha North in the 3 p.m. semifinal Friday.
