Hawks Baseball Team Loses Fourth One-Run Game

A late rally from four runs down falls short in a 5-4 loss to South Milwaukee.

Winning close games has not come easily for the Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks baseball team.

Greenfield dropped a 5-4 home decision to visiting South Milwaukee on Monday to fall to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Woodland Conference. All four of the Hawks' losses have been by one run.

The Rockets snapped a 4-4 tie with a run in the top of the seventh on two hits, and the Hawks made it interesting in the bottom of the frame when a walk and an error helped Greenfield load the bases with two outs.

But the hosts were unable to push across the tying run.

“Offensively, we weren't able to find the holes and get the big hit,” Greenfield coach Lee Kleszczynski said.

South Milwaukee took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning when Greenfield’s bats got going. Matt Brokob hit a one-out double and scored on Connor Lewandowski’s two-out single. Nate Rios singled to drive in Lewandowski and cut the visitor’s score in half.

In the bottom of the sixth, South Milwaukee committed three errors leading to two more Greenfield runs that tied the score at 4-4.

Greenfield Evan Greco pitched seven strong innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.

“South Milwaukee plays small ball well and put together some timely hits,” Kleszczynski said. “It seemed like most the hits were scattered and Greco was able to pitch out of jams, but in the fifth inning SM got the big hits when they needed them.”

Lewandowski reached base safely in all four of his plate appearances for the Hawks, who visit South Milwaukee on Tuesday.
